Inaugural Day of Second Elephant Grooming Competition Marks Chitwan's Tourism and Elephant Festival

Today marks the second day of the Elephant Beauty Contest and Tourism Festival inaugurated at the 17th Elephant Festival in Sauraha, Chitwan. The Secretary of the Regional Hotel Association, Mahesh Khanal, announced that the winner, selected from seven adorned and well-maintained elephants showcasing cleanliness and health, will be declared by the Chitwan Sauraha Hotel Association.

The Elephant Beauty Contest, part of the ongoing five-day festival, began at Pulinjik Field, Chitrasari in Mainahari of Ratnanagar Municipality-7. The festival, first initiated in 2004 during the Christmas and English New Year season, aims to create an inviting ambiance for tourists visiting Sauraha. Over time, additional elephant-related activities have been integrated into the event.

After a continuous hiatus of three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this long-awaited program has resumed this year. The Chitwan Sauraha Hotel Association (CHAA) is the main organizer of the festival, with support from the United Elephant Operation Cooperative and the Chitwan Restaurant and Bar Association.

The festival schedule includes today's Elephant Beauty Contest, followed by an Elephant Race in the Rapti River tomorrow, an Elephant Forest Feast on the day after, and the event's conclusion on Saturday.

The resumption of this event after the pandemic hiatus signifies a resurgence in the region's tourism and cultural vibrancy, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the world of these majestic creatures amidst festive celebrations.
